I hope this is OK to have a thread as a separate catch-all for KB questions.

I'm looking for clarification on linking KB articles with each other. I am using the See Also function. But I'd also like to link , hyper style, from within the article. I see the options are to link to a url, a file, or an internal link. Is the internal link a target within the same article or can that be to another article? And how does that dropdown box get populated?

Hi Aprill - good idea to start a Knowledge Base thread. There's a lot that can be said here...

Currently it's not possible to link a knowledge base to another knowledge base via a hyperlink in the body of the KB article...at least not in the desktop edition. The only way to link one KB to another is via the "See also" linking.

However...

If you are using the HelpMaster Pro web interface, then you have other options. If you allow your clients to log in via the web interface, and they view a KB article, any hyperlinks within the article will be "clickable" and will take them to where the hyperlink points. If that hyperlink is to another KB article, then you can achieve this linking effect. The only thing to rembember is to hyperlink the articles using the URL of how they would appear in the web browser.

This only works for the client side of the web interface at present, because all hyperlinks are rendered as active. If you log into the web interface as a staff member, the KB article opens in edit mode, which does not activate the embedded hyperlinks.

I hope this makes sense.

You've got some good ideas here (as usual) which I'll discuss with the development team. In the upcoming release of HelpMaster Pro v8.1, we've drastically improved the linking abilities of the Knowledge Base articles. Basically they can link to anything now. I'll be posting a blog soon about all the new features in 8.1

Best regards,

Rod
