When a login page is not a login page

Where should you link to when the web is Active Directory enabled? The answer may surprise you...

One interesting configuration point for the new web interface is this: if you have Active Directory login enabled for the web, the one place you will not be logged in directly is the default.aspx page – where you would otherwise normally login!

Why is this so?  Let’s examine how the Active Directory web login works:

If a client accesses any protected page (that requires authentication), it will redirect them.

  • If dual authentication is enabled, it will redirect them (ultimately) to the login virtual directory application where their login credentials are checked – and after a successful verification they are redirected back to the page they requested.
  • If ‘HelpMaster Pro login only’ is selected they will be directed back to the default page – where they must log in manually.

Imagine now what would happen if the default page also did this redirect?  Everything would be peachy for those who have Active Directory credentials – but what about the rest of us?  If there are no Active Directory credentials available, you are redirected to the normal login page.  The last thing you want is this page to try another Active Directory login and redirect you all over again…you may never see HelpMaster Pro again!  Hence, the default page is left unprotected (basically, it doesn’t require a login to see it).

So, what page should Active Directory users set as their ‘link to’ page for the web interface?  Well, where would they like to start?!?  You should be able to pick any link inside the web interface and it will take the straight there… or alternatively, to use the ‘winlogin.aspx’ page in the virtual directory… Just don’t use the default login page – you should now see that only when you log off!
