    Hi Guys,

I see you've updated the web application in V9 so that it prompts the user to kick the current user off if there is already an active session that hasn't timed out when using automatic logon facilitated by AD Integration. This is a step in the right direction I think.

I'm thinking that I set the timeout period to something like 30 minutes so that:

Scenario 1) If a user leaves a session open, it will be ended within 30 minutes so that they aren't prompted to kick their old session off if they log on again within that period.

Scenario 2) Their session doesn't time out if they start logging a call, go and do something else, then come back and see that their session has timed out. In this scenario, should the web application actively kick the user off their active session or will it only notify the user that the session has time out when they click a link? (I have observed both behaviours at different times)

Also, I was wondering if there is a way in the Web Administration to change the timeout period as there was in V8? There appears to be a way to change this in IIS for both the hmplogin and main helpmaster virtual dirs but I don't know if changing it there will interfere with the way this web app is supposed to work..

    Cheers,

    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

Session timeout setting can be specified in both Web configuration file (was done previously via Web admin) and also in IIS. Allowing people to specify in both places caused some confusion in the past. Also, you might have noticed that from v9 onwards the HMP specific settings have been moved out of the Web configuration file to the database. This gives us more flexibility when it comes to upgrading those settings and deploying the web application.

Scenario 1: After the session expiry there's no session to kick off and AD login should work without any prompt. The application should already behave this way in v9.

Scenario 2: This is something that requires further investigation. My understanding is the session timeout setting currently is not altered or paused based on the type of user activity. There are side effects in doing so. For example, people might start logging a call and then decide to visit some other page without completing the logging process resulting a session that never timesout by itself until the user explicitly logs herself out.

Please let us know if you have any different expected behaviour.

    Thanks Suman,

In regards to Scenario 2 I will need to do some more testing in order to gain a better understanding of how it works in terms of timeouts, I will put forward any questions once I know more.

But.. before I do that, in relation to changing the timeout period, I do remember reading in the help file or somewhere that this setting is stored in the database and whilst this is stored in the database for Helpmaster, there must be some mechanism that changes this setting in IIS when the change is actioned in the database I am assuming? Can the change in whichever table this value is stored be done by the Web Administration or other Helpmaster GUI application or does the value have to be changed manually using a SQL tool?

As mentioned earlier, from v9 onwards the HelpMaster Pro Web Admin does not allow manipulating IIS session timeout setting anymore. You can do it by either providing a timeout value for "sessionState" setting in your Web.config file or via the Application Configuration screen in IIS (defaults to 20 min). The only reference to session timeout discussion I could find in the help file is: "The Web Module -> Installation and configuration -> Step 4... -> Performance configuration suggestions".

Note that, in case you are using IIS 6, the session timeout period might be interfered by process recycling. In that case you'll have to update that setting or turn it off altogether (here's an informative discussion on this: "http://blogs.msdn.com/b/david.wang/archive/2005/09/19/why-do-i-lose-asp-session-state-on-iis6.aspx" ).
